Lucid dreaming is where you are in a dream and actually notice that you're dreaming. We all dream regularly but we don't often remember what we dreamed about. When you start to take control of your dreams, you're starting to dream lucidly.

So how easy is it to learn to dream lucidly? And, given that most dreams a pretty odd anyway, why on earth would you want to start to control them?

Learning to lucid dream is like anything in life, it just takes practice.

Up until now, you've probably known when you've dreamed, but only if it was a particularly vivid dream. Everyone dreams several times a night. The thing is, we forget almost all the dreams we have. It's actually quite rare for us to remember our dreams unless we put our mind to it.

Keep your note pad and a pencil close by, maybe on your bedside table. You'll probably also need a small lamp or torch as well. This book is your own private dream journal.

Each time you wake up, the first thing you do should be to write down as many details as you can remember from your most recent dream. At first, this likely won't be much detail. But within a few days, you'll find yourself remembering more about more dreams.

Once you've been using your dream journal for a few days, it's likely that you'll start to notice some common patterns in the dreams you've written down. Maybe you're flying in them. Child Sleep Apnea Can Lead To Substantially Lower IQ Scores

Although it has been known for a long time that children who suffer from sleep apnea often produce relatively low scores on IQ tests (normally getting an average of 85 against a score of 101 for children without sleep apnea) one thing which has not been known until quite recently is that this results from chemical changes in the brain. This means that an otherwise bright kid may well produce a second-rate performance as a result of nothing more than a sleeping problem that, in the majority of cases, can be relatively easily treated.

In a recent study conducted in Baltimore, 31 children between the ages of 6 and 16 (19 of whom were suffering from severe sleep apnea) were examined with a special form or magnetic resonance imager (MRI) and it was noted that the children suffering from sleep apnea displayed important changes in the right frontal cortex and hippocampus which are parts of the brain which are associated with higher mental function and learning.

This study also showed that these kids were suffering from levels of three brain chemicals which were indicative of brain damage. This alteration of the chemistry of the brain brought about by the presence of sleep apnea may or may not be lasting and, at this point, further studies are needed to see whether or not this effect can be reversed.

Even if reversal is possible however and the brain chemistry and cognitive function can be normalized, children with sleep apnea will suffer a loss in learning as long as they are suffering from untreated sleep apnea and certainly cannot rewind time and regain this learning period.

Parents should of course already be looking out for the signs of sleep apnea in their children but this study clearly indicates that early diagnosis and treatment of this sleeping problem might have a substantial affect on your child’s success in later life.

There are a number of signs of sleep apnea including frequent pauses in breathing while sleeping that often lead to an arousal from sleep and tossing and turning in bed. Children may also display loud or labored breathing, snoring, coughing, gasping and, occasionally, bedwetting at a time when this phase should usually have passed.

1. Set a regular time to go to bed and do not vary this by more than a few minutes from day to day.

3. When you find that you cannot get to sleep within say 20 minutes of climbing into bed then do not just lie in bed trying to get to sleep, as the harder you try the harder it will become. As an alternative, climb back out of bed and do something like listening to some relaxing music or reading a book. Once you start to feel tired, get back into bed and you will be asleep in next to no time.

4. Do not be tempted to stay up late doing homework or studying for a test. Although this might appear to be the answer to a specific problem in the short term, and could keep you out of trouble for handing in your homework late or see you through a test, in the longer run your overall performance will fall and any short term benefits will soon be lost.

5. Do not be tempted to take a nap in the afternoon school. Should you find that you are so tired you are unable to keep your eyes open then take a nap but limit it to no more than 45 minutes or an hour.

6. Steer clear of any form of drink containing caffeine after 3 o’clock in the afternoon. This of course applies to tea and coffee, but also extends to chocolate drinks and colas.

7. Avoid eating a heavy meal close to bedtime. You certainly should not go to bed hungry and having a light snack before bedtime is fine, however going to bed on a full stomach will make it difficult to fall asleep and affect the quality of your sleep.

8. Despite the fact that teenagers will often spend a lot of time in their bedroom turning it into more of a 'living' than a 'sleeping' room, avoid the temptation to use the bed for anything other than sleeping. Do not sit in bed writing, reading, playing games, watching TV or anything else but reserve it only for sleeping so that your body learns to associate getting into bed with going to sleep.

9. Do not take any strenuous exercise within several hours of going to bed. If you want to play football or engage in other sports or strenuous activities then do these shortly after school and not an hour or two before going to bed.

10. At bedtime ensure that the bedroom is dark, quiet and cool. Do not close your bedroom up, turn up the heat and get into bed to watch TV. Rather, turn the heating down, open the window a bit if possible to allow in some fresh air and make the room as dark as possible.
